Impact of severe hypoglycaemia on psychological outcomes in adults with type 2 diabetes: A systematic review
Diabetic Medicine Aug 09, 2019
Hendrieckx C, et al. - In adults with type 2 diabetes, researchers studied the impact of severe hypoglycemia on psychological outcomes, such as emotional well-being, health status, and quality of life. Data were extracted and analyzed from published reports. Of 3,756 abstracts reviewed, 29 studies met inclusion criteria. Overall, severe hypoglycemia was linked to increased fear of hypoglycemia and reduced emotional well-being, health status, and diabetes-specific quality of life. Effect sizes indicated that there was a greater connection with fear of hypoglycemia than with general health status. Despite the limitations of empirical studies, these findings suggested that severe hypoglycemia may be linked to impaired psychological outcomes in adults with type 2 diabetes. Thus, psychological impact of severe hypoglycemia during clinical consultations should be addressed by healthcare professionals to help individuals minimize exposure to severe hypoglycemia and psychological consequences.
