Impact of rurality on national trends in thyroid cancer incidence and long-term survival
The Journal of Rural Health May 23, 2019
McDow AD, et al. - Using Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results data (2000-2012), researchers compared urban and rural counties with respect to thyroid incidence and long-term survival. Specifically, they hypothesized that thyroid cancer incidence would be greater in urban counties, with no significant difference in long-term survival, given that disparities exist in rural access to care. In this observational study, they reported a higher incidence and increased long-term survival for thyroid cancer in urban areas vs rural areas. However, whether rural-urban disparities in long-term survival reflect healthcare differences, variations in therapy, or other origins, remains uncertain.
