Impact of patient comorbidities on surgical site infection within 90 days of primary and revision joint (hip and knee) replacement

American Journal of Infection Control May 13, 2019

Edmiston CE, et al. - In this largest study to date on this subject, researchers evaluated how preoperative patient and clinical factors influence the risk of surgical site infection (SSI) in the 90-day period following primary and revision total joint replacements (TJR). They analyzed a total of 335,134 total knee replacements and 163,547 total hip replacements in this retrospective observational cohort study. Compared to primary total joint replacement, SSI was highest following revision total joint replacement. Patient comorbidities, including diabetes, immunodeficiency syndrome, congestive heart failure, and coagulopathy, were noted to be significantly associated with a higher risk of SSI after TJR.
