Impact of major depression on cardiovascular outcomes for individuals with hypertension: Prospective survival analysis in UK Biobank
BMJ Open Oct 07, 2019
Graham N, Ward J, Mackay D, et al. – Via performing a prospective cohort survival analysis with a median follow-up of 63 months (702,902 person-years), experts evaluated whether a history of major depressive disorder (MDD) in middle-aged people with hypertension has any impact on first-onset cardiovascular disease outcomes. Four mutually exclusive groups were matched: hypertension only (n = 56,035), MDD only (n = 15,098), comorbid hypertension plus MDD (n = 12,929), and an unaffected (no hypertension, no MDD) comparison group (n = 50,798). Comorbid hypertension and MDD presented greater hazards in comparison with hypertension alone for adverse cardiovascular outcomes; however, evidence of an interaction between hypertension and MDD was variable over time. Moreover, future cardiovascular risk prediction tools may benefit from the addition of questions regarding former history of depressive disorders.
