Impact of gender on the management and outcome of aortic stenosis patients
European Heart Journal May 27, 2021
Bienjonetti-Boudreau D, Fleury MA, Voisine M, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the influence of gender on the treatment as well as the outcome of patients based on aortic stenosis (AS) severity. Participants were patients experiencing at least mild-to-moderate AS [aortic valve area ≤1.5 cm 2 and peak jet velocity ≥2.5 m/s or mean gradient ≥25 mmHg]. For them, Doppler echocardiography data were retrospectively studied. Findings of this large series of patients revealed less referrals to AVR as well as higher mortality among women, despite similar baseline hemodynamic AS severity. Most of the time, this appeared to happen in the patient subset exhibiting discordant markers of AS severity (i.e. low-gradient AS) where females were less referred to AVR.
