Impact of gender and metabolic comorbidities on COVID-19 mortality risk across age groups: 66,646 inpatients across 613 U.S. hospitals
Clinical Infectious Diseases Dec 23, 2020
Goodman KE, Magder LS, Baghdadi JD, et al. - Researchers conducted a retrospective cohort study to determine the connection between common patient characteristics, such as gender and metabolic comorbidities, and mortality across age-groups among COVID-19 inpatients. The sample consisted of patients discharged from hospitals in the Premier Healthcare Database between April – June 2020. Twelve thousand three hundred eighty-eight (18.6%) died in-hospital from 66,646 (6.5%) admissions with a COVID-19 diagnosis in 613 U.S. hospitals. In multivariable analysis, male sex was independently linked to a 30% higher mortality risk. Men with COVID-19 who are hospitalized are at elevated risk of death in all ages. Age-dependent effects were illustrated by hypertension, diabetes with chronic complications, and obesity, with the highest relative risks among adults aged 20-39 years.
