Impact of bisphosphonate therapy on dental implant outcomes: An overview of systematic review evidence
International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Dec 01, 2018
Mendes V, et al. - Researchers performed an overview of systematic reviews conducted to assess the impact of bisphosphonates on dental implants and the risk of developing bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw after dental implant surgery. The maximum score in the quality assessment was achieved by none of the systematic reviews included in this study. Available evidence revealed no higher risk of dental implant failure or marginal bone loss for patients with a history of bisphosphonate compared to patients who have not used bisphosphonates. A higher tendency for bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw was evident for the patients who undergo surgical trauma during the installation of dental implants.
