Impact of aerobic exercise on muscle mass in patients with major depressive disorder: A randomized controlled trial
Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment Aug 13, 2018
Kerling A, et al. - In patients with a major depressive disorder (MDD), researchers conducted a randomized controlled trial to determine the impacts of regular aerobic exercise training on muscle mass. Participants in the study were 30 inpatients with MDD, of whom 20 participated in an additional supervised exercise program. The data presented showed a significant impact of the exercise intervention on the amount of muscle mass depending on age, body mass index, and the physical activity score. They found that regular exercise increases muscle mass in patients with MDD among other positive effects, and should be used as an additional treatment tool.
