Impact of a quality control circle on the incidence of catheter-associated urinary tract infection: An interrupted time series analysis
American Journal of Infection Control Feb 23, 2020
Zhong X, Xiao LH, Wang DL, et al. - Researchers sought to inscribe a quality control circle (QCC) activity on the theme of decreasing the incidence of catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI). Further, they evaluated the impact of the QCC using an interrupted time series analysis. A QCC activity was carried out with the theme of decreasing CAUTI in a general tertiary hospital in Shenzhen, China, from April 2017 to December 2017. Before the QCC, the routine measures were assessed; during the QCC, usual measures and the countermeasures of QCC were implemented, and after the QCC, the routine measures were determined and adherence to the core measures of QCC was maintained. Before, during, and after the QCC activities, a downward trend was observed in both the catheter use ratios and mean indwelling time; meanwhile, an upward trend was observed in the compliance rate of CAUTI prevention measures. Findings support the value of a quality control circle for reducing the incidence of CAUTI. The impact of QCC interventions could be better evaluated via interrupted time series analysis. They suggest monitoring and feedback the compliance rates as beneficial to control CAUTI.
