Collier ARY, McMahan K, Yu J, et al. - Researchers sought to evaluate the immunogenicity of COVID-19 messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines in pregnant and lactating women, including against emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern. In this exploratory, descriptive, prospective cohort study, they assessed 103 women who received a COVID-19 mRNA vaccine, 30 of whom were pregnant and 16 of whom were lactating. Immunogenicity was elicited in all these women; they identified vaccine-elicited antibodies in infant cord blood and breast milk. Development of cross-reactive immune responses against SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern were identified in pregnant and nonpregnant vaccinated women. Overall findings suggest COVID-19 mRNA vaccines as immunogenic in pregnant as well as lactating women and induces immune responses against SARS-CoV-2 variants.
