Immobilization-induced osteolysis and recovery in neuropathic foot impairments
Bone Sep 27, 2017
Sinacore DR, et al. - This study assessed patients with neuropathic plantar ulcers (NPU) versus Charcot neuroarthropathy (CNA) for differences in foot skin temperature; calcaneal bone mineral density (BMD) after immobilization; calcaneal BMD after 33Â53 weeks of recovery; and percent of feet classified as osteopenic or osteoporotic after recovery. Findings demonstrated that CNA feet versus NPU feet displayed a greater osteolysis following immobilization with a reduced recovery. Additionally, attenuated recovery of pedal BMD in CNA feet resulted in a greater percentage of feet classified as osteoporotic and osteopenic.
