Immediately sequential bilateral cataract surgery: The rationale, implementation and beliefs of ophthalmic surgeons across Europe
Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery Jul 31, 2019
Mills EC, et al. - In this survey-based, questionnaire study, researchers evaluated the attitudes and beliefs held towards ISBCS, including estimating the incidence of ESCRS members currently performing ISBCS and investigating the barriers of ISBCS implementation, as well as evaluating the relevance of such findings to UK practice. Three hundred three of the 2,200 recipients responded, 247 of whom were eligible for assessment. The survey reflects concerns about infection and medicolegal risks among ophthalmologists, but reports of bilateral endophthalmitis are extremely rare when the proper recommendations are followed. The findings from this survey could be used to inform ISBCS service delivery in the UK, taking the voices of colleagues overseas into account. The most common reason ISBCS was stopped was that the respondent no longer believed in ISBCS' benefit.
