Hyperspectral imaging for skin assessment in systemic sclerosis: a pilot study

Rheumatology Mar 31, 2020

Chen YM, Lai KL, Chen HH, et al. - This research was sought to correlate the ability to differentiate between systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients and healthy controls using skin scores, ultrasound and hyperspectral imaging (HSI). A total of 31 SSc patients were included in the study. Using short-wave infrared light, the spectral angle mapper (SAM) of HSI was detected. Skin scores, ultrasound analyzed skin severity to detect dermal thickness and strain elastography. Skin scores, strain ratio, thickness and SAM were measured by applying Spearman’s correlation. Via receiver operating characteristic curves, comparisons of various assessment tools were conducted. This study's findings demonstrate that SAM was associated with skin scores and sufficiently sensitive to detect subclinical disease. To analyze skin changes in SSc, HSI can be applied as a novel, non-invasive technique.
