Hyperglycemia and Adverse Pregnancy Outcome Follow-up Study (HAPO FUS): Maternal gestational diabetes and childhood glucose metabolism
Diabetes Care Jan 23, 2019
Lowe WL, et al. - In the Hyperglycemia and Adverse Pregnancy Outcome (HAPO) cohort, researchers studied associations of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) not confounded by treatment with childhood glycemia. Study participants included 4,160 children (aged 10–14 years) who completed all or part of an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and whose mothers had a 75-g OGTT at around 28 weeks gestation with blinded glucose values. Findings suggested a positive correlation of GDM with child’s 30-minute, 1-hour, and 2-hour, but not fasting glucose, and was inversely correlated to insulin sensitivity and oral disposition index, but not insulinogenic index. Compared to offspring of mothers without GDM, offspring exposed to untreated GDM in utero were insulin resistant with limited β-cell compensation. Data reported that GDM was linked to childhood impaired glucose tolerance significantly and independently.
