Hospitalization, Alzheimer disease and related neuropathologies, and cognitive decline
Annals of Neurology Dec 04, 2019
James BD, Wilson RS, Capuano AW, et al. – Researchers investigated the potential contributory roles of Alzheimer disease and related neuropathologies with respect to the link between hospitalization and cognitive decline in old age. Specifically, they analyzed 526 older individuals (mean age at death: 90.9 years; 71% female) without dementia at baseline who finished annual cognitive testing and were autopsied at death as part of a longitudinal clinical–pathologic cohort investigation. The occurrence of 1,383 hospitalizations was reported during a mean of 5.1 years, and the mean annual rate of hospitalization was estimated to be 0.5. In all, the investigators observed faster rates of cognitive decline in older individuals with more hospitalizations, and this link was more pronounced in cases with more tau tangle density and with neocortical Lewy body pathologies.
