Hospitalisation and mortality in patients with comorbid COPD and heart failure: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Respiratory Research Feb 20, 2020
Axson EL, Ragutheeswaran K, Sundaram V, et al. - Researchers focused on the influence of heart failure (HF) comorbidity on hospitalization and death of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients, via this systematic review of studies comparing hospitalization, rehospitalization, and death between COPD patients with vs without HF. For inclusion, the studies were required to have described crude and/or adjusted rate ratios, risk ratios, odds ratios, or hazard ratios. These studies were identified from MEDLINE and Embase. Findings afforded substantial evidence that the presence of HF comorbidity in COPD patients results in increased COPD-associated rehospitalization as well as all-cause mortality. The influence of HF comorbidity may vary based on COPD phenotype, HF type, or HF severity.
