Histopathology features of the lung in COVID-19 patients
Diagnostic Histopathology Dec 15, 2020
Montero-Fernández MA, et al. - In patients with COVID-19, hypoxic respiratory failure from acute respiratory distress syndrome is the leading cause of death. In all the postmortem series up to date, the histopathological pattern commonly described is diffuse alveolar damage (DAD). Division of DAD in two phases has been done, and variation in the morphological features seen in the specimens has been noted depending on the length of the disease. An acute/exudative phase occurs during the first week after the pulmonary injury; this is followed by the organizing/proliferative phase. Vascular thrombosis, endothelialitis and angiogenesis are described as the additional features.
