Hip fractures and characteristics of living area: A fine-scale spatial analysis in France
Osteoporosis International Mar 09, 2020
Héquette-Ruz R, Beuscart JB, Ficheur G, et al. - In order to find out the relationship between hip fracture incidence and living area characteristics in France, researchers enrolled all individuals aged 50 or older, living in France, who were hospitalized for HF between 2012 and 2014, using the French national hospital discharge database. This study included a sum of 236,328 HF in the French hospital national database, leading to an annual HF incidence of 333/100,000. For each spatial unit, a standardized incidence ratio (SIR) was estimated and adjusted on age and gender. An ecological regression was conducted to examine the relationship between HF standardized incidence and ecological variables. They applied three variables to describe the living areas: a deprivation index (French-EDI); healthcare access (French standardized index); land use (percentage of artificialized surfaces). It is demonstrated that the characteristics of the living area are correlated with significant differences in the risk of hip fracture of older people.
