High thrombus burden in patients with COVID-19 presenting with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction
Journal of the American College of Cardiology Sep 04, 2020
Choudry FA, Hamshere SM, Rathod KS, et al. - This research was intended to present the demographic, angiographic, and procedural characteristics alongside clinical outcomes of consecutive cases of COVID-19–positive patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) compared with COVID-19–negative patients. Between March 1, 2020, and May 20, 2020, researchers conducted a single-center, observational study of 115 consecutive patients admitted with confirmed STEMI treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention at Barts Heart Centre. There is a strong signal toward higher thrombus burden and poorer outcomes in patients presenting with STEMI and concurrent COVID-19 infection. In all STEMI cases, this supports the requirement for establishing COVID-19 status. Future study is needed to understand the mechanism of increased thrombosis and the benefit of aggressive antithrombotic therapy in selected cases.
