High prevalence of parkinsonism in patients with MCI or mild Alzheimer's disease

Sasaki S - In patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or mild Alzheimer's disease (AD), researcher studied the prevalence of the coexistence of parkinsonism. Researcher assessed outpatients with Mini–Mental State Examination, Clinical Dementia Rating Scale, NIA-AA criteria, MRI, and 123I-IMP SPECT (3D-SSP). Using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale–III and 123I-FP-CIT dopamine transporter SPECT, parkinsonism in patients diagnosed with MCI or mild AD was investigated. The study sample consisted of 106 patients aged 60 to 97 years. In MCI or mild AD, the prevalence rate of the coexistence of mild parkinsonism might be higher than previously recognized.
