High prevalence of iodine deficiency in pregnant women living in adequate iodine area
Endocrine Connections May 04, 2018
Mioto VCB, et al. - This trial examined the iodine status of pregnant women living in iodine-adequate area by spot urinary iodine concentration (UIC) and correlation with serum thyroglobulin (sTg), thyroid volume (TV) and thyroid function. An analysis was performed of pregnant women at 3 trimesters. Thyroid function and sTg were measured using electrochemiluminescence immunoassays. Findings reported that iodine deficiency was identified frequently in pregnant women living in iodine-adequate area. No link was determined between sTg concentration and TV with UIC. The Brazilian salt iodization program prevented deficiency but did not maintain iodine status within adequate and recommended ranges for pregnant women.
