High prevalence of asymptomatic malaria infections in adults, Ashanti Region, Ghana, 2018
Malaria Journal Oct 16, 2020
Heinemann M, Phillips RO, Vinnemeier CD, et al. - Researchers aimed at determining the prevalence of asymptomatic Plasmodium falciparum and non-falciparum infections in Ghanaian adults in the Ashanti region during the high transmission season. Conducting rapid diagnostic test (RDT) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), they screened asymptomatic adult residents from five villages in the Ashanti Region, Ghana, for Plasmodium species during the rainy season. Findings revealed that in the Ghanaian forest zone, most adult residents are asymptomatic Plasmodium carriers. Nearly 73% of adult residents were PCR-positive for at least one Plasmodium species. As RDT did not detect the high Plasmodium prevalence in adults, they emphasize targeting all members of the population in malaria eradication efforts. Beneath Plasmodium falciparum, they emphasize incorporating infections with P. malariae, P. o. curtisi and P. o. wallikeri in screening and treatment.
