Heart rate and bone mineral density in older women with hypertension: Results from the Korea National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Jul 18, 2018
Jung MH, et al. - Researchers performed this retrospective cohort study to investigate if high heart rate was linked with low bone mineral density (BMD) in older women with hypertension in the Korea National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey 2009-2010. They analyzed BMD profiles and clinical and laboratory data for postmenopausal women aged 60 and older with hypertension (N=981) divided into two groups according to resting heart rate, with a cut-off value of 80 bpm, which has been found to be associated with osteoporosis. They found in older women with hypertension, high heart rate was independently linked with lower BMD. These findings indicated that proactive BMD monitoring could aid the management of older women with hypertension and a high heart rate.
