Respiration Apr 02, 2020
Shafiq M, Ma X, Taghizadeh N, et al. - Researchers utilized the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project – National Inpatient Sample (HCUP-NIS) databases from 2004, 2009, and 2014, to analyze national trends in healthcare utilization as well as outcomes in hospitalized malignant pleural effusion (MPE) patients. Overall 92,034 hospital discharges spanning a decade (2004–2014) were examined. Findings revealed a decline in the burden of hospital-based resource utilization related to MPE over time, with a decrease in attributable hospitalizations by one third in the duration of 1 decade. Correspondingly, a reduction in the number of inpatient pleurodesis procedures has been reported during this time span.
