Head and neck cancer complications in the geriatric population based on hospital case volume
ENT Journal Jun 13, 2019
Rubin SJ, et al. - Researchers investigated the predictive value of surgical case volume for surgical outcomes when managing geriatric patients with head and neck cancer. They performed this cross-sectional study using data from the Vizient Database, which included a total of 93 academic institutions. The moderate case volume institutions had the largest number of head and neck cancer cases involving comorbidities (90.54%) and had the highest rate of overall complications (27.50%) occurrence compared to the complication rate of 22.89% in low volume hospitals and 21.50% in high volume hospitals. As per findings, they suggest managing the more complex cases at high volume centers as beneficial and developing multidisciplinary teams to optimize case management and minimize complications.
