Habitual intake of dietary advanced glycation end products is not associated with arterial stiffness of the aorta and carotid artery in adults: the maastricht study

The Journal of Nutrition May 17, 2021

Linkens AM, Eussen SJ, Houben AJ, et al. - This study sought to assess if a higher intake of dietary advanced glycation end products (AGEs) is associated with arterial stiffness. Researchers conducted a cross-sectional observational study including a total of 2,255 participants (mean ± SD age: 60 ± 8 y, 51% male, mean ± SD BMI). They conducted multiple linear regression analyses adjusting for potential confounders (demographic, hemodynamic, cardiovascular, and dietary factors). The data demonstrate that habitual intake of the dietary AGEs N ε-(carboxymethyl)lysine, N ε-(1-carboxyethyl)lysine and MG-H1 is not correlated with arterial stiffness assessed as carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity, carotid distensibility coefficient, or carotid Young's elastic modulus in adults aged 40–75 y.
