Greater admissions, mortality and cost of heart failure in adults with congenital heart disease
Heart Dec 26, 2020
Burstein DS, Rossano JW, Griffis H, et al. - By using the Nationwide Emergency Department Sample and Nationwide Inpatient Sample, researchers compared results, emergency department (ED) and hospital resource use, as well as advanced heart failure (HF) therapies among adults with congenital heart disease and heart failure (ACHD-HF) vs non-ACHD with HF (HF-non-ACHD). Higher ED admissions, longer hospital length of stay and greater hospital expenses were reported in ACHD-HFs. Significantly higher mortality in ACHD-HFs with single-ventricle physiology or two-ventricle physiology was observed compared with HF-non-ACHD. Findings revealed a significant ED and hospital resource use in ACHD-HFs, with an increase noted over the past 10 years. However, less common use of advanced HF therapies (ventricular assist device and transplantation) was reported in comparison with those without adult congenital heart disease.
