Gout is associated with a higher risk of chronic renal disease in older adults: A retrospective cohort study of U.S. Medicare population
BMC Nephrology Mar 21, 2019
Singh JA, et al. - In a 5% random sample of Medicare claims including adults 65 years or older, researchers investigated if a higher risk of incident (new) chronic kidney disease (CKD) could be seen in relation to gout, once the demographics (age, gender, race), medical comorbidity and common medications were adjusted. They used multivariable-adjusted Cox regression analyses. Overall 1,699,613 subjects were eligible, and of those, development of incident CKD was reported in 168,065, including 150,162 people without gout and 17,903 people with gout. Multiple sensitivity analyses corroborated that a 3-fold higher risk of CKD was found in association with gout.
