Global disease burden estimates of respiratory syncytial virus–associated acute respiratory infection in older adults in 2015: A systematic review and meta-analysis
The Journal of Infectious Diseases Mar 24, 2019
Shi T, et al. - Researchers assessed all studies worldwide investigating the disease burden of respiratory syncytial virus–associated acute respiratory infection (RSV-ARI) in older adults aged ≥ 65 years to estimate the community incidence, hospitalization rate, and in-hospital case-fatality ratio (hCFR) of RSV-ARI in these adults, stratified by industrialized and developing region. They identified ~1.5 million episodes of RSV-ARI in older adults in 2015 in industrialized countries (data for developing countries were missing). Among these, hospitalization was reported for ~14.5%. According to findings, 336,000 hospitalizations for RSV-ARI in older adults and about 14,000 in-hospital deaths related to RSV-ARI were reported globally. Those aged ≥ 65 years had greater hospital admission rates and hCFR vs those aged 50–64 years. These findings suggested a substantial disease burden of RSV-ARI among older adults, with limited data from developing countries.
