Gestational weight gain and its effect on birth outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa: Systematic review and meta-analysis
PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Apr 28, 2020
Asefa F, Cummins A, Dessie Y, et al. - Via performing a systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers appraised the distribution of gestational weight gain and its correlation with birth-outcomes in Sub-Saharan Africa. Among 1,450 retrieved studies, the inclusion criteria were met by 26 studies. Per analysis, low-income Sub-Saharan countries had the percentage of inadequate GWG as high as 80% while it was as low as 15% in upper middle-income Sub-Saharan African countries. The percentage of inadequate GWG was more than 58% in all studies from low-income Sub-Saharan countries. Among underweight women, 67% to 98% exhibited inadequate GWG. Studies with a greater percentage of women with excessive GWG had a greater percentage of women who were overweight or obese, and those with a lower percentage of women with a lower percentage of excessive GWG had a lower percentage of women with high BMI (overweight or obese). Based on these outcomes, they suggest the necessity for development of regional GWG guidelines for Sub-Saharan African countries.
