Gestational diabetes exposure and adiposity outcomes in childhood and adolescence: An analysis of effect modification by breastfeeding, diet quality, and physical activity in the EPOCH study
Pediatric Obesity Jul 16, 2019
Sauder KA, et al. - This study was undertaken to determine if the connection between gestational diabetes (GDM) exposure and adiposity can be altered by optimal diet and activity behaviors in infancy, childhood, and adolescence. At 10.4 (SD, 1.5) and 16.7 (SD, 1.2) years, the authors evaluated breastfeeding (maternal recall), dietary intake (food frequency questionnaire), physical activity (3-day recall), and adiposity (BMI, waist-to-height, visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue, and subscapular-to-triceps skinfold ratio) in 564 children (84 exposed to GDM). An increased skinfold ratio, visceral, and subcutaneous adipose tissue was connected to GDM exposure among those with <6 months of breast milk, but only related to increased skinfold ratio among those with >6 months of breast milk. GDM exposure was linked to increased BMI and subcutaneous adipose tissue in those with >1 hour of vigorous activity but not in those with <1 hour of vigorous activity. Overall, the authors concluded that the GDM exposure association with surplus adiposity is reduced in offspring with better diet and activity behaviors in infancy, childhood, and adolescence.
