Geographic proximity is associated with transmission of suicidal behavior among siblings
Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica May 23, 2019
Edwards AC, et al. - Researchers examined, in siblings, the link between “contagion,” or social transmission, and the risk of suicidal behavior (SB). Swedish sibling pairs were followed until a suicide attempt or completion was registered for one of them (N=111,848). Hazard ratios quickly dropped up to 25km and, beyond 150km, mostly stabilized. Across all pairs, they noted reduced SB risk in association to a greater age difference between siblings; sibling trios also displayed the same findings. In line with the notion of suicide contagion, they noted a higher risk of suicidal behavior after a sibling's suicide completion or attempt as a part of sibling closeness.
