Geographic distributions of age-related macular degeneration incidence: A systematic review and meta-analysis
British Journal of Ophthalmology Sep 13, 2020
Zhou M, Duan PC, Liang JH, et al. - In this systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers reviewed the geographic distribution of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) incidence. Databases (PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science) were explored for publications of early and late AMD before September 2019. Studies were involved if they applied a standardized photographic assessment and classification system. Twenty-four population-based studies (70,123 people aged 55 years or older) were involved in the meta-analysis. Data reported that the pooled global annual incidences of early and late AMD, respectively, were 1.59% and 0.19%. The average age at baseline, ethnicity, region, and gender were predictors for an incident late AMD, whereas only average age at baseline and ethnicity were related to the incidence of early AMD. This meta-analysis provides an up-to-date overview of AMD globally, which can provide scientific guidance for planning and implementing public health strategies like screening programmes for AMD in both specific geographic locations and ethnic groups, as well as worldwide.
