Geographic and demographic variability in transcatheter aortic valve replacement dispersion in the United States
Journal of the American Heart Association Jun 06, 2021
Young MN, Kearing S, Malenka D, et al. - Given that transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has transformed the management of aortic valve stenosis, researchers conducted this US claims‐based study to characterize the geographic and demographic dispersion of this disruptive technology relative to surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR). From 2012 to 2017, they analyzed a 100% sample of fee‐for‐service Medicare beneficiaries and tested national rates of TAVR vs SAVR. For the first time in the United States, the number of Medicare beneficiaries receiving TAVR surpassed that of SAVR in 2017. However, there is significant variation in TAVR geographic expansion and patient demographics when compared with SAVR.
