Gender differences in risk factors for depressive symptoms in patients with COPD: The 2014 and 2016 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
BMC Pulmonary Medicine Jun 05, 2021
Choi JS, Kwak SH, Son NH, et al. - The present study was conducted to explore gender differences of risk factors of depressive symptoms in adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Researchers conducted a population-based cross-sectional study using data from the 2014 and 2016 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. They used spirometry to distinguish individuals with COPD, characterized as a forced expiratory volume in 1 s/forced vital capacity ratio < 0.7. In adults with COPD, the female gender is the main risk factor for depressive symptoms. As risk factors of depressive symptoms in COPD patients vary according to their gender, there is a need for different approaches to managing depression in males and females with COPD.
