Functional and morphological evaluation of meibomian glands in the assessment of meibomian gland dysfunction subtype and severity
American Journal of Ophthalmology Nov 22, 2019
Xiao J, Adil MY, Chen X, et al. - In this cross-sectional study involving 447 patients and 20 healthy volunteers, researchers classified subtypes of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and assessed the dependency of dry eye signs, symptoms, and parameters on MGD subtype. According to the guidelines from 2011 at the Norwegian Dry Eye Clinic, the right eyes of patients with MGD diagnoses were involved. The authors discovered that low-delivery MGD patients had worse dry eye parameters and ocular symptoms than those with elevated meibum delivery, suggesting the pivotal role of meibum secretion in ocular surface health that should be aimed in MGD treatment. Moreover, non-obvious MGD cannot be diagnosed using traditional dry eye tests and needs morphologic evaluation of meibography images to verify meibomian gland loss.
