Full-thickness macular holes after surgical repair of primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachments: Incidence, clinical characteristics, and outcomes
Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology Jun 24, 2021
Starr MR, Lee C, Arias D, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to analyze the incidence, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of full-thickness macular holes (FTMHs) after surgical repair of primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RRDs). From January 1, 2015, to July 31, 2020, all patients with an FTMH that developed after RRD repair were included in this study. During the study period, 470 eyes were diagnosed with both an FTMH and an RRD. FTMH is relatively uncommon after RRD repair, with a prevalence of 0.28% in the series, and 87% of these holes closing after surgery or spontaneously. Following RRD repair, about 15% of FTMHs spontaneously closed, and these holes were significantly smaller.
