Frailty is related to subjective cognitive decline in older women without dementia
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Sep 18, 2019
Gifford KA, Bell SP, Liu D, et al. - Given the association of physical frailty (or loss of physiologic reserve) with cognitive impairment and dementia and that early pathologic changes of dementia may be represented as subjective cognitive decline (SCD), researchers performed a cross-sectional study to clarify the link between these disease markers via a cohort of 306 older adults with normal cognition (n = 174) or mild cognitive impairment (n = 132). These community-based participants were recruited from the Vanderbilt Memory & Aging Project. The investigators found an association of frailty component and composite scores with SCD prior to the presence of overt dementia. The presence of this link before overt cognitive impairment was suggested. The clinical manifestation of frailty may differ by sex, with primary links seen in women.
