Frailty and nutritional status in older people: The Mini Nutritional Assessment as a screening tool for the identification of frail subjects
Clinical Interventions in Aging Jul 22, 2018
Valentini A, et al. - Researchers performed an observational study to determine the association between nutritional status, assessed using Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), and frailty among patients aged 65 years or older, with or without hip fracture at the University Hospital “Tor Vergata” in Rome. They found that in the pre-frail group and not in the frail group, there was a progressive decline in the prevalence and risk of malnutrition (RMN). A close association of nutritional status with the degree of frailty was also observed. In a logistic regression, the best variable predicting both pre-frailty and frailty was MNA. Overall, findings highlighted the contribution of malnutrition to the development of frailty, and suggested MNA can help identify a substantial part of both frail and pre-frail patients at low cost and care.
