Huguet N, et al. - In this retrospective cohort analysis, community health center (CHC) patients uninsured prior to enactment of the Affordable Care Act (ACA; pre-ACA: January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2013) were followed after enactment (post-ACA: January 1, 2014, to December 31, 2015) to determine ambulatory care use and diagnosed health conditions in these subjects. Researchers analyzed electronic health record data from CHCs in 11 US states that expanded Medicaid eligibility. Following ACA, uninsured status was noted in 20.9% of patients, Medicaid was gained by 15.0%, 12.4% gained other insurance, and 51.7% did not have a visit. Overall, the percentage of CHC patients who continued to be uninsured was significant; diagnosed health conditions were reported in many who remained uninsured, and one-half continued to have ≥ 3 visits to CHCs.
