Fine needle aspiration of the liver: A ten-year single institution retrospective review

Human Pathology Jul 31, 2019

McHugh KE, et al. - As radiologists and gastroenterologists have published most of the recent literature on sampling in fine needle aspiration (FNA) of the hepatic tumors, researchers undertook a 10-year retrospective review of a single institution's cytopathology experience with the diagnosis of liver lesions. For the 10-year interval, January 2007 through December 2016, they conducted electronic record review of the cytopathology files (CoPathPlus; Cerner Corp.) and identified 713 hepatic FNAs. These FNAs were categorized as follows: positive for malignancy 467 (65.5%), atypical 49 (6.9%), negative 171 (24.0%) and non-diagnostic 26 (3.6%). With a sensitivity of 93.4% and specificity of 96.7%, the excellent diagnostic performance of hepatic FNA was reported. Metastatic disease far exceeds primary hepatic neoplasms in regards to liver masses. Pancreas (30.1%) and colon (12.7%) were identified to be the top two metastatic primary sites.
