Fine-needle aspiration of the liver: A 10-year single institution retrospective review
Human Pathology Sep 13, 2019
McHugh KE, et al. - Given that radiologists and gastroenterologists have published most of the recent literature on hepatic tumor sampling in fine needle aspiration (FNA), researchers carried out a 10-year retrospective review of the cytopathology experience of a single institution with liver lesion diagnosis. The cytopathology files (CoPathPlus; Cerner Corp) were reviewed electronically for the 10-year interval January 2007 through December 2016. There were 713 hepatic FNAs categorized as follows: positive for malignancy 467 (65.5%), atypical 49 (6.9%), negative 171 (24.0%) and non-diagnostic 26 (3.6%). Pancreas and colon were identified to be the top two metastatic primary sites. The excellent diagnostic performance of hepatic FNA was reported with a sensitivity of 93.4% and specificity of 96.7%. Metastatic disease far exceeds primary hepatic neoplasms in regards to liver masses.
