Findings in exudates can help distinguish benign gastric ulcers from ulcerated adenocarcinomas
Histopathology Mar 15, 2018
Hissong E, et al. - The variations in the features of luminal debris, including microorganisms, from ulcerated gastric cancers and debris associated with benign ulcers were assessed. Of the ulcerated cancers, 76% harbored non-H.pylori bacterial colonies, compared with only 22% of peptic ulcers. Gastric cancers were colonized by non-H. pylori microbes. The data suggested that the detection of numerous bacterial colonies, filamentous bacteria, or fungi in biopsy material obtained from ulcerated gastric lesions should raise suspicion for an underlying malignancy.
