Factors associated with hospital admission in adult patients with asthma exacerbations: A systematic review
Journal of Asthma Mar 28, 2019
Arrotta N, et al. - In adult patients with asthma exacerbations, researchers identified factors associated with hospital admission following presentation to the emergency department. Of over 5,000 relevant articles identified via literature search, 15 reporting on adult disposition after emergency department met full inclusion criteria; of these, 11 were included in the final analysis. According to this systematic review, factors like patient demographics (eg, female sex, older age), patient vital signs/severity, and history were linked to admission for acute asthma after emergency department presentation. Clinician in the emergency department can use these to effectively discern high-risk patients for admission, which may lead to more evidence-based decision-making.
