Expression levels of plasma exosomal miR-124, miR-125b, miR-133b, miR-130a and miR-125b-1-3p in severe asthma patients and normal individuals with emphasis on inflammatory factors

Atashbasteh M, Mortaz E, Mahdaviani SA, et al. - Researchers focused on the alterations in the expression of selected microRNAs (miRNAs) in plasma exosomal fractions of patients suffering from severe asthma. They examined expression of miRNAs in relation to the alterations in inflammatory markers. Among the people referred to asthma and allergy clinic, severe asthma patients (n = 30) as well as healthy persons (n = 30) were segregated. Asthma patients were found to have significantly higher serum hs-CRP (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein) and total IgE (immunoglobulin E) than controls. Downregulation of expression of miR-124, miR-133b, and miR-130a was seen in asthma patients vs controls. In this study, miR-125b overexpression in severe asthma which was found to be related to serum IgE and hs-CRP may indicate an association of this molecule with inflammatory reactions. miR-125b upregulation together with reduced expression of miR-124, miR-133b, and miR-130a may indicate the usefulness of this miRNA profile for diagnosis and differentiation of clinical phenotypes of asthma.
