Exposure to risperidone vs other antipsychotics and risk of osteoporosis-related fractures: A population based study
Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica Oct 11, 2019
Clapham E, Bodén R, Reutfors J, et al. - In this nationwide cohort study, researchers compared the risk of osteoporosis-related fractures [defined as a non-open hip/femur fracture in primary analyses] correlated with risperidone, other atypical antipsychotics and typical antipsychotics. Swedish registers have been used to identify individuals with two consecutive dispensations of risperidone (n = 38,211), other atypical antipsychotics not including paliperidone (n = 60,691), or typical antipsychotics (n = 17,445) within three months from 2006 to 2013. Compared with other atypical antipsychotic agents as a group, risperidone does not seem to be linked to an increased risk of osteoporosis-related fracture. A moderately high incidence of hip fractures relative to other atypical antipsychotics was observed for typical antipsychotics, possibly due to residual confounding.
