Exercise training adds cardiometabolic benefits of a Paleolithic diet in type 2 diabetes mellitus

Journal of the American Heart Association Jan 23, 2019

Otten J, et al. - Researchers evaluated the cardiac fat, structure, and function in 22 overweight and obese individuals with type 2 diabetes following the receipt of a Paleolithic diet, with and without additional supervised exercise training for 12 weeks. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either a Paleolithic diet and standard-care exercise recommendations (PD) or a Paleolithic diet plus supervised exercise training for 3 hours per week (PD-EX). Using cardiovascular magnetic resonance, including proton spectroscopy, myocardial triglycerides levels, cardiac morphology, and strain were measured at baseline and after 12 weeks. Major favorable metabolic changes were observed in both groups. Findings revealed reduced myocardial triglycerides levels and improved left ventricle remodeling in the group that received exercise training plus adherence to a Paleolithic diet.
