Exenatide once weekly slows gastric emptying of solids and liquids in healthy, overweight, subjects under steady-state concentrations
Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism Jan 11, 2020
Jones KL, Huynh LQ, Hatzinikolas S, et al. - In order to investigate the impacts of 8 weeks’ administration of exenatide once-weekly (ExQW) on gastric emptying of solids and liquids, glucose absorption and postprandial glycaemia in health, researchers randomized 32 healthy individuals to receive ExQW or matching placebo (PLAC) over the period of 8 weeks. Without any difference between ExQW and PLAC groups, scores for nausea were consistently low. After the administration of ExQW, they noticed gastric emptying of solids and liquids substantially and attenuated glucose absorption and the postprandial rise in plasma glucose. They found that 8 weeks administration of the ‘long-acting’ GLP-1RA, ExQW in healthy individuals, indicates gastric emptying of solids and liquids substantially, with consistent reductions in glucose absorption and postprandial glycaemia.
