Examining gender as a predictor and moderator of treatment outcomes for binge-eating disorder: Analysis of aggregated randomized controlled trials

Lydecker JA, et al. - Researchers examined the influence of gender on treatment outcomes among men and women who participated in binge-eating disorder (BED) randomized controlled trials (RCTs). From one medical center, data of 660 adults, both men (n = 170) and women (n = 490), with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-fourth edition (DSM-IV)-defined BED, from RCTs testing cognitive-behavioral therapy, behavioral weight loss, multimodal treatment, and/or control conditions. As per findings, men and women with BED differ in treatment-seeking. Despite this, comparable or better treatment outcomes were evident among men vs women, including significantly greater weight loss. Thus, for both men and women, disseminating evidence-based BED treatments is promising.
