Evidence for dissociable linkage of dimensions of psychopathology to brain structure in youths
American Journal of Psychiatry Jun 28, 2019
Kaczkurkin AN, et al. - The connections between dimensions of psychopathology and brain structure were examined by studying 1,394 youths who underwent brain imaging as part of the Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort. Researchers used a bifactor model of symptoms to construct dimensions of psychopathology. High-resolution 3-T MRI was used to quantify cortical thickness and volume. Results indicate a dissociable relationship where reduced cortical thickness has the strongest correlation to fear and global reductions in gray matter volume has the strongest correlation to overall psychopathology. These results may help to understand the relationship of abnormalities of brain development with different dimensions of psychopathology.
